The Little Norse Prince succeeds in providing both historical and entertainment value; it’s not simply a work for the fans, but anyone with an interest in cinema.” – DVD Times

Set in Iron Age Scandinavia, a young boy named Hols embarks on a journey that will lead him face-to-face with Grunwald, a malevolent ice demon that is responsible for the devastation of Hols’ ancestral homeland.

The first collaboration between Studio Ghibli giants Isao Takahata and Hayao Miyazaki, The Little Norse Prince (also known as Hols: Prince of the Sun) was one of the first anime to show audiences that this medium could be used to tell complex stories with subtext and shading. While the animation may look primitive by today’s standards, there are still excellent action sequences and a grasp of visual depth that is familiar to fans of Miyazaki and Takahata. A milestone in the history of anime.
