Not rated, but equivalent to R18

Set in 1920s Japan, an orphaned girl is taken captive by a travelling freak show, and eventually falls in love with one of its members.

Perhaps the hardest film on this list to track down, the film is only available on DVD in France. This grotesque, surrealistic, erotic masterpiece is the product of five years’ worth of painstaking work by the director Hiroshi Harada. Unable to find funding for his controversial pet project, Harada poured his life savings into the production of this film, animating every single frame by hand – and by himself. To this day, Harada only permits the film to be shown in Japan if the venue is dressed up as a carnival freak show!
