Tekkon kinkurîto
Directed by Michael Arias
Written by Anthony Weintraub
Rated R13
“This is a dazzling, visually stunning film, a joy to watch, at once allegory, future noir, gleeful fantasy, a tale of childhood and of good and evil, of morality and compromise, of fraternal bonds of all degrees and subtler natures.” – Andrew Robertson, Eye for Film
Black and White, two tough street urchins, attempt to defend their home turf of Treasure Town from invading property developers and their yakuza (Japanese mafia) sponsors.
The only film on this list directed by a Westerner (albeit an American ex-pat living in Tokyo), Tekkonkinkreet nevertheless shows an attention to visual detail that is 100% Japanese. Juggling hyperrealistic backgrounds with slapdash, simplistic character design, it’s a wild ride from start to finish.
