Momotarô: Umi no shinpei
Directed and written by Mitsuyo Seo
Not rated, but equivalent to G
A Japanese wartime propaganda film that compares the activities of the Imperial Navy to the story of traditional folk hero Momotaro (“Peach Boy”).
Momotaro makes this list perhaps not due to any outstanding artistic achievement, but rather for its immense historical importance. The first feature-length “anime” film ever made, it was thought to be lost for almost 40 years after most copies of the film were destroyed during the American occupation of Japan. However, a negative copy was found in 1984 and the film is now available on a Japanese VHS package.
This film is not available on DVD or VHS outside of Japan, but the full movie (which is in the public domain) can be seen on YouTube.
